York Region recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, we recognize Tuesday, September 30, 2025, as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We acknowledge the lasting impacts of residential schools and recognize the ongoing journey toward healing, understanding and meaningful reconciliation.
Today, we honour the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools and their families and communities. This is a painful chapter in Canadian history - a solemn reminder of the injustices faced by First Nations, Inuit and Métis children who were forcibly separated from their families, cultures and languages.
As a Region, we remain deeply committed to acknowledging the truths of our shared history, learning from the lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples and fostering mutual understanding. We recognize building strong, equitable relationships requires ongoing dialogue, respect and meaningful collaboration with Indigenous communities.
I encourage everyone across York Region to learn more about Indigenous histories, cultures and contributions, reflecting on how each of us can play a role in advancing reconciliation. Whether through education, participation in community events, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives or wearing orange as a symbol of solidarity, every action – and every child matters.
As a community, we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to contribute to the healing process and help create a more inclusive, compassionate future for generations to come. Together, let us honour this day by deepening our commitment to truth, justice and reconciliation.
To recognize the strength and courage of survivors and the lives lost, York Region will fly the Survivors flag at half-mast at 17250 Yonge Street and 17150 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket from September 25 to September 30, 2025.
