Dental Screening
Canadian Dental Care Plan: For more information, visit Canadian Dental Care Plan.
Dental screening is provided in select grades in York Region publicly funded - elementary schools, as well as by appointment in York Region dental clinics.
Healthy teeth help children eat, speak, and feel good about themselves. When children have problems with their teeth, it can cause pain, make it hard to eat or talk, and even lead to missing school. Dental screening can identify issues with a child’s teeth before they become urgent.
A dental screening will help find dental problems so children can receive the right treatment. It can also be the first step to receiving assistance for urgent dental problems through the Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) program, or receiving preventive dental care at one of York Region’s Public Health dental clinics.
Eligibility
- Children in select grades in York Region’s publicly funded elementary schools
- All children in York Region 17 years old and under are eligible to receive a dental screening in a York Region Dental Clinic

School Dental Screening
Before School Screening
Parents/Guardians will receive a letter from their child’s school detailing the date of dental screening, grades being screened, and details regarding dental screening follow up.
During School Screening
- Dental screening consists of a quick assessment by a registered dental hygienist who will look inside the child's mouth
- A new, single-use mirror is used for each child
After School Screening
- Parents/Guardians will be notified of screening results using the email provided by the child’s school. Emails will be encrypted.
- Parents/Guardians of children with urgent dental findings will be contacted by phone following the school screening
If you are not able to afford dental care for your child, they may be eligible for free dental services through Healthy Smiles Ontario.
A dental screening does not replace an in-office dental exam with a dentist.
