Transportation Master Plan

York Region is expected to grow to 2,020,000 people and 990,000 jobs by 2051. To support this growth, the Region has completed an update to the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) in coordination with the Regional Official Plan and the Water and Wastewater Master Plan. Research, analysis and community input has guided the update. Thank you to all who participated and provided feedback.

The TMP is the long-term vision for York Region’s transportation network, encompassing strategy, initiatives and infrastructure. The plan looks ahead 30 years and considers the Region’s transportation infrastructure needs to support growth and the changing needs of travellers. It supports healthy communities and economic growth by planning for safe, reliable travel and efficient movement of goods.

York Region reviews the TMP every five years to ensure the Regional transportation network meets the needs of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders. The TMP was updated through Approach #1 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment master planning process.

The 2022 TMP was approved by York Regional Council on September 29, 2022.

Virtual Public Information Centre #1

Thank you to everyone who participated in the virtual Public Information Centre for the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) update, held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting featured a presentation by Regional staff followed by an interactive discussion with citizens and a panel of experts. Input from the session will guide the TMP vision and goals for walking, cycling, transit and road improvements over the next 30 years.

Transportation Master Plan 2009

In 2002, York Region approved an innovative Transportation Master Plan that provided a framework for making decisions about the transportation system until 2031.

Since the plan was approved, York Region has met many goals described in the plan, including:

Launching VIVA – the first phase of a Regional Bus Rapid Transit system
Working with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to start construction of the Spadina Subway Extension
Starting to build dedicated rapidways for the next phase of the Bus Rapid Transit system
Creating development guidelines that are focused on transit
Completing a Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan
Developing Transportation Management Associations through the Smart Commute initiative
Implementing Transportation Demand Management programs
