Health and Well-Being Review
The world is constantly changing. Environmental, political, economic and social shifts are becoming more common, and they inevitably ripple down to affect our communities. These shifts can influence everything from local job markets to housing demands, to healthcare needs. By identifying trends early through regular analysis, we can plan responsive budgets, allocate resources, and design programs and services to meet resident needs before they become acute or widespread.

The 2024 York Region Health and Well-Being Review provides a comprehensive analysis of socio-economic, health and well-being trends in York Region using the most current and reliable data, and how the Region is working to respond. It also identifies the importance of innovations, integrated partnerships and advocacy to realize sustainable and responsive solutions that build healthier, more engaged and inclusive communities for residents at every stage of life.

2024 Findings
Key trends identified in 2024, include:
- Growing, aging and diversifying population
- Increasing number of residents unable to meet basic needs such as housing and food
- Mental health and well-being challenges
- Demand for human services outpacing what the Region and community partners can support
The Region is one player in a complex human services system that supports our residents. Addressing current and future needs requires collaborative planning, advocacy and evidence-based innovation with all levels of government, municipalities, non-profit and community organizations, and the private sector.
Why did we undertake this Review?
This annual Review reflects York Region’s commitment to deliver responsive and effective services that meet the changing needs of our residents. It supports informed and data empowered planning and decision-making and meaningful collaboration to support the well- being of all who live, work and play in York Region.
What does this mean for residents?
This Review highlights the growing pressures faced by York Region residents and the human services system that aims to support all residents. It tells the story behind the data—what emerging trends mean for people’s day-to-day lives and how those trends are shaping demand for services.
This includes services that are available to help support residents and how to access them, as well as advocacy to senior levels of government that the Region and partners are taking to realize sustainable and responsive solutions.
What actions has York Region taken based on the 2024 findings?
York Region delivers critical human and health service programs to support residents. However, ensuring residents' health and well-being is a shared responsibility that demands support from all levels of government. The Region is advocating for funding and working to identify new partnerships and innovative solutions to enhance services for residents.
How can you use this information?
This Review is intended for a wide range of audiences, including:

- Residents and community advocates
York Region is developing a toolkit to help you in raising awareness of the socio-economic, health and well-being trends highlighted in the 2024 Health and Well-Being Review. The toolkit will also support advocacy to provincial and federal governments for poverty reduction and housing stabilization policies and funding.
The toolkit will include key messages, social media content and ready-to-use materials for various communication channels. You are encouraged to use and share these resources to:
- Amplify key messages and drive collective action
- Raise awareness of local needs
- Advocate to senior levels of government for decision making, solutions and funding
- Support strategic planning and service alignment
- Develop collaborative and innovative solutions
