Celebrating the York Regional Forest and National Forest Week
On behalf of York Regional Council and the residents of The Regional Municipality of York, I am proud to recognize National Forest Week, taking place from September 21 to 27, 2025.
Each year, National Forest Week is celebrated across Canada to raise awareness about our forest heritage and the importance of this valuable and renewable resource. Forests are fundamental to our economy, culture, traditions, history and future. Families, communities and individuals depend on them for their livelihoods, health and way of life.
This year’s theme, Roots of Resilience: From Seed to Canopy, highlights the critical role forests play in sustaining healthy ecosystems and resilient communities. In York Region, we are proud to be home to the York Regional Forest, spanning more than 2,600 hectares with 22 public tracts and 150 kilometres of scenic trails, including nearly seven kilometres that are fully accessible.
The York Regional Forest is a source of pride and a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability through programs like It’s In Our Nature – Management Plan for the York Regional Forest and York Region’s Greening Strategy. These efforts ensure the long-term health of our natural environment, while offering free access for residents to connect with nature every day of the year.
As we celebrate National Forest Week, I encourage all residents to take time to enjoy our forests and reflect on the vital role they play in the health of our communities, our environment and our shared future.
