York Region reminds motorists to slow down as pothole repairs continue

As warmer weather settles in, York Region is reminding motorists to slow down and stay alert around road crews working hard to repair potholes and maintain safe travel conditions. With 12,000 potholes already filled this year, it’s important to drive cautiously through work zones to protect the staff working to improve our roads.
Crews are out daily, inspecting and repairing damage caused by the harsh winter. Potholes are especially common during the spring and summer months due to freeze-thaw cycles and increased traffic volumes. These seasonal conditions cause pavement to expand and contract, leading to cracks and surface deterioration. As a result, pothole repairs have become a top priority during this time of year. However, due to the high volume of repairs needed, delays may occur as crews work to catch up.
Residents are encouraged to report potholes and other issues on Regional roads using the Report a Problem app or by visiting york.ca/Roads. So far this year, 6,691 pothole concerns have been reported by the travelling public. These reports complement regular patrols by helping crews identify and respond to issues more efficiently.
Once a pothole is reported, it follows a structured response process:
- Inspection to assess the condition of the pothole
- Prioritization based on how severe the pothole is and the level of disruption it may cause in high-traffic or critical areas
- Repair, with timelines varying depending on urgency, weather conditions and available resources
Community participation plays a key role in maintaining road safety. By reporting issues promptly, residents help ensure that repairs are made as quickly and effectively as possible.
