Leave space around snow plows to keep roads safe
As winter weather continues, York Region is reminding motorists and pedestrians to leave space around snow plows to keep roads safe and crews protected while they do essential maintenance work.
Snow plows play a critical role in keeping roads clear during snow and freezing rain events. To do their job safely and effectively, snow plows must travel slowly and need extra space to stop, turn and clear roads. They also have many blind spots, making it difficult for operators to see motorists following too closely.
Driving slower and allowing extra space between your vehicle and a snow plow improves reaction time and stopping distance, especially in winter weather conditions. Snow plows can also shift sideways as part of the clearing process, particularly after hitting snowpack or drifts. When snow plows are clearing all lanes side by side, motorists must not pass. Passing plows working together to clear all lanes is illegal and dangerous.
Reminders for motorists
- Do not try to pass or travel beside a snow plow
- Drive a safe distance behind a plow; you may see them, but they may not see you
- Avoid driving in blind spots
- Leave extra time to get to your destination to reduce stress and prevent speeding
York Region has crews on the road 24 hours a day, seven days a week to keep roads safe for all travellers.
Reminders for pedestrians
Pedestrians also play an important role in winter road safety. Large vehicles, like snow plows, may have difficulty seeing pedestrians who are too close to the road.
Pedestrians are encouraged to:
- Walk on sidewalks or as far as possible from the travelled portion of the road
- Wear bright, reflective clothing to help drivers see you. Be Visible. Be Seen.
- Stand a safe distance back from the curb at intersections and bus stops
- Keep phones down and heads up when crossing or waiting for transit
Reminder for all residents
York Region and York Regional Police want to remind residents that 911 is for emergencies.
Slow moving snow plows are not an emergency. They are travelling at safe speeds to clear roads properly. Together, we’re working to keep roads safe and emergency lines available when they’re needed most.
