York Region recognizes National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I join residents across Canada in recognizing the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
On January 29, 2017, six people tragically lost their lives and 19 others were seriously injured in a terrorist attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy.
Today, on the ninth anniversary of this horrific act of violence, we honour the lives that were taken and pay tribute to the victims. We also stand in solidarity with the survivors, their families and all those who have experienced loss, fear or harm because of Islamophobia, racism and hate.
In the context of ongoing global conflicts and rising tensions felt within our own communities, Canada has seen a troubling increase in hate-motivated incidents. It is our shared responsibility to speak out against discrimination, confront prejudice and work together to build communities rooted in respect, understanding and compassion.
As one of Canada’s most diverse and rapidly growing municipalities, York Region remains steadfast in our commitment to fostering welcoming and inclusive communities where everyone feels safe and valued. Our diversity is a source of strength and a vital contributor to our social, cultural and economic well-being. It reinforces the importance of standing united against hatred in all its forms.
On behalf or Regional Council and the almost 1.3 million people who call our communities home, I extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this senseless act of terror and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to combating Islamophobia, racism and all forms of hate.
