York Region Issues Extended Heat Warning
York Region is issuing an extended heat warning as a result of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s continued heat warning for York Region. Environment and Climate Change Canada has indicated these conditions may persist until Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Prolonged heat events can increase health risks
Warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms seek immediate medical attention. Check on friends, family and neighbours frequently during heat events.
Heat-related illnesses are preventable
Staying cool, hydrated and reducing outdoor physical activity are the best ways to beat the heat during hot and humid weather.
Everyone is at risk from extreme heat, especially older adults, infants and young children, those who are socially isolated, people who work or exercise in the heat and those with certain medical conditions.
Find ways to stay cool
- Stay indoors in cool, well-ventilated areas
- Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric (e.g. cotton)
- If you do not have air conditioning in your home, go to cool places within your community, such as local libraries, community centres, public pools and shopping malls
- Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight
- Check the Cooling Spaces App for more information on the locations and opening times of cool spaces in York Region
Drink extra fluids
- Increase your fluid intake regardless of your activity level
- Drink plenty of water before you feel thirsty
Reduce physical activity, especially in the full sun
- Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early in the morning or late in the evening
- Reduce sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and when the UV Index is reported to reach three (moderate) or higher
- If you need to be outdoors in the heat, rest frequently to allow your body temperature to cool down
- Avoid sun exposure by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or use an umbrella
- Wear sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher
