Recognizing International Day of Older Persons
On October 1, we recognize and celebrate the resilience, wisdom and invaluable contributions of older adults.
International Day of Older Persons is a meaningful opportunity to honour older adults who help shape our communities, future generations and offer perspectives that enrich our lives. Older adults continue to play vital roles in our society – mentoring youth, volunteering and continuing to work in various fields.
Here in York Region, seniors now outnumber children, and by 2051, nearly one in four residents will be over age 65. While many seniors remain healthy, active and independent, some require additional supports and age-friendly services.
York Region offers programs and services to support older adults and caregivers, including:
- Long-term Care Homes
- Adult Day Programs
- Mobility On-Request Transit Services 65+
- Accessible Transit Services
- Housing
- Immunization Clinics
- Healthy Aging and Fall Prevention Resources
- Seniors Dental Program
- Support Services for Independent Living
Celebrate older persons on October 1 and reflect on how you can support and uplift them. Whether it’s a simple phone call, volunteering in long-term care or advocating for support, we all have a role to play in building a community where seniors feel valued, supported and empowered at all ages and stages of life.
