Heat Warning Issued for York Region
With the arrival of the first heat event of the season in York Region, Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Heat Warning. The Heat Warning is expected to last until Tuesday, June 24, 2025. York Region Public Health is reminding residents to take extra precautions to stay safe in the heat, especially when our bodies are not used to the heat after months of cooler weather.
Everyone is at risk from extreme heat, but older adults, infants and young children are especially vulnerable to the heat. Additionally, people who work or exercise outdoors and those with certain medical conditions are at increased risk.
Remember to check on friends, family and neighbours who may be at risk.
Find ways to stay cool
- Stay indoors in cool, well-ventilated areas
- Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
- If you do not have air conditioning in your home, go to cool places within your community, such as local libraries, community centres, public pools and shopping malls
- Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight
- Check the Cooling Spaces App for more information on the locations and opening times of cool spaces in York Region
Drink extra fluids
- Increase your fluid intake regardless of your activity level
- Drink plenty of water before feeling thirsty
Reduce physical activity, especially in the full sun
- Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early in the morning or later in the evening
- Reduce sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and when the UV Index is reported to reach three (moderate) or higher
- If you must be outdoors in the heat, rest frequently to allow your body temperature to cool down
- Avoid sun exposure by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or use an umbrella
- Wear sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher
Should the Heat Warning continue, an extended heat warning may be issued.
