Housing York Inc. continues to expand affordable housing and community supports
Newmarket – Housing York Inc. (HYI) Board of Directors approved the 2024 Annual Report, outlining annual progress and the 2025 to 2028 HYI Strategic Plan, which follows the successful conclusion of HYI’s previous strategic plan.
“We are making significant strides in addressing housing and homelessness through strategic investments and innovative solutions, yet a great deal of work and investment is still required as demand continues to increase,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Eric Jolliffe. “We are committed to partnering with all levels of government, community agencies and the private sector. Together, we will continue expanding affordable housing options and support residents’ needs.”
The 2025 to 2028 HYI Strategic Plan outlines priorities focused on collaborating with York Region to sustain and increase HYI’s portfolio, encouraging resilient communities, successful tenancies and driving innovation and continuous improvement.
“York Region and Housing York are committed to addressing the critical housing needs in our communities, including new housing options and supporting residents with increasingly complex needs,” said Town of Newmarket Mayor John Taylor, Chair of Housing York Inc. “By increasing our housing supply, we can build more resilient communities and support those experiencing or at-risk of homelessness. All levels of government need to act with urgency and we are committed to being an active partner in addressing the housing crisis.”
HYI continues to invest in long-term asset sustainability and resident well-being through critical infrastructure improvements. In 2024, HYI delivered $12.6 million in capital investments across 98 projects, including:
- $5.8 million in exterior building repairs, including window replacement and balcony repairs
- $2.5 million in heating, ventilation and air conditioning, mechanical and electrical upgrades, including hot water boilers, generator replacement and sanitary septic system upgrades
- $1.2 million in interior building repairs, such as kitchen refurbishments
- $3.1 million in site and ground upgrades, including parking lot replacements and landscape upgrades
HYI is the largest of 43 community housing operators in York Region and supports 4,500 residents. It owns and operates 38 sites with 3,124 units, which is almost half (46%) of all community housing in York Region. HYI manages building operations, ensures properties are well-maintained and financially sustainable, supports successful tenancies and promotes resident engagement. Additionally, HYI provides property maintenance services for seven emergency and transitional housing facilities to support York Region’s work to address homelessness.
