Emergency Preparedness Week: Be Prepared. Know Your Risks
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I proudly recognize May 3 to 9, 2026, as Emergency Preparedness Week.
This year’s theme, Be Prepared. Know Your Risks, is a timely reminder that while we cannot predict emergencies, we can take practical steps to be ready for them. Understanding the risks in our communities is the foundation of effective preparedness and resilience.
York Region faces a range of potential emergencies, including severe weather, flooding, power outages and public health events. Taking time to prepare in advance, whether at home, at work or in our communities, helps ensure we can respond quickly and recover more effectively when challenges arise.
York Region continues to work closely with local municipalities, emergency services and community partners to strengthen emergency planning and coordination. Together, we are focused on our efforts to help protect residents and maintain essential services during times of crisis.
I want to thank the emergency management professionals, first responders and community partners whose expertise and commitment help keep York Region safe and prepared every day.
As we mark Emergency Preparedness Week, I encourage residents to take time to learn about the risks that may affect them and to take simple steps to be prepared.
