York Region Transit investments deliver results with expanded service and smarter schedules
Newmarket – York Regional Council received the 2025 York Region Transit (YRT) System Performance Report, highlighting consistently outstanding ridership levels, reliable services and innovative achievements throughout 2025.
“In 2025, York Region Transit continued to offer innovative services leading to 23.7 million riders, reflecting our responsiveness to changing travel patterns and diversifying community needs,” said Eric Jolliffe, York Region Chairman and CEO. “Key initiatives such as adding 60 electric buses and charging infrastructure, expanding service and technology and improving facilities like bus stops are making transit more reliable and sustainable for the 85,000 travellers who rely on it every day.”
2025 YRT System Performance highlights include:
- Ridership reached 23.7 million in 2025
- Ridership increased 15.4% on York Region Transit On-Request (153,035 riders) and Mobility On-Request services (482,099 riders)
- On-time performance reached 94%, exceeding targets – continued investments in asset management are required to maintain service reliability while travel patterns change and demand increases
- Key initiatives delivered, including 112 service improvements, expansions to On-Request services and implementing several technology and asset management-related programs to provide customers with safe and reliable transit service
In December 2025, the Ontario government announced the extension of the One Fare Program to keep transit costs down for riders. In 2025, approximately 9.51 million cross-boundary trips were made between YRT and the TTC under the One Fare Program, representing 40.1% of YRT’s system ridership.
“We are seeing transit investments pay off this year as we expand service hours and adjust schedules in response to changing travel patterns and increasing demand,” said Town of Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas, Chair of Public Works – Transportation Services. “I am pleased to see continued support for provincial initiatives, including capital planning for the Yonge North Subway Extension and the extension of the One Fare program, making cross-boundary travel more affordable and simpler while driving ridership growth across the Region.”
YRT has published its 2026 to 2030 Business Plan, advancing the long-term vision of the Transportation Master Plan by outlining near and medium-term strategies to meet transit needs and adapt to changing travel patterns. The plan is guided by financial responsibility, equity and diversity, safety, innovation and customer focus to continue to make public transit a desirable travel option in York Region, connecting people to places.
