Make Halloween Accessible for Everyone
As the season of costumes, candy, and community approaches, York Region encourages everyone to help ensure all children and families, including those with disabilities, can enjoy a safe, welcoming and inclusive trick-or-treating experience.
Children and families with disabilities may face barriers that prevent them from fully participating in Halloween festivities. With thoughtful adjustments, we can all create environments where everyone is included. Remember, accessibility not only helps people with disabilities; it benefits everyone.
If you’re planning to celebrate Halloween this year, consider these best practices to make your celebration more accessible:
- Join the Teal Pumpkin Project: Place a teal pumpkin on your doorstep to signal you offer non-food treats. This gesture promotes inclusion for trick-or-treaters with food allergies or other conditions.
- Display an Accessible Trick-or-Treating lawn sign. Put up a sign at least a week before Halloween to let families know your home is committed to providing an accessible experience.
- Make your set-up easy to reach: Put your treat bowl, teal pumpkin or sign close to the sidewalk or at the bottom of your stairs and ensure the area is well-lit. Stairs and uneven surfaces can be challenging for those with mobility-related disabilities.
- Be patient and respectful of non-verbal communication: Some children may be non-verbal or may communicate differently. Avoid expecting verbal responses and be kind and patient with all trick-or-treaters.
- Keep decorations sensory friendly: Avoid flashing lights, loud noises or startling effects that may be distressing for individuals, specifically for those with epilepsy, sensory sensitivities or anxiety.
By taking these small but meaningful steps, we can all contribute to a more inclusive Halloween—one where every child feels welcome and valued.
We can all make a difference in our neighborhoods and be champions of accessibility.
Let’s have a safe and accessible Halloween this year.
