Every year, thousands of bicycles are thrown away or recycled for scrap metal. Many of these bicycles can be easily repaired and reused, while others can be used for parts.
Together with Markham Cycles, York Region is collecting unwanted bicycles to be repaired and refurbished so they can get back on the road where they belong.

York Region, in partnership with Markham Cycles, is piloting a Cycle Swap and Share event to give unwanted, used bicycles a second life.
Whether you're looking for a bike or have one to swap and share, this event is for you! Please note bicycles are provided as is and may require repairs at the participant's expense.

This event is exclusively for York Region residents by appointment only. Space is limited and registration required. Each registrant may take up to two bicycles.

If you wish to donate bicycles only, no registration is required. Bicycles can be donated during regular operating hours at Elgin Mills or McCleary Court Community Environmental Centres.

What is the Cycle Swap and Share?

Do I need to register for this event?
Yes, space and inventory are limited. To participate in the Cycle Swap and Share on Thursday, September 3, 2026, you must register using the registration link on the website.
Do I need to bring a bike in order to take one home?
No, you do not need to bring a bike in order to participate in the event. When you register you will be asked whether you are swapping a bike or just wishing to take one home. However, please note there are no guarantees that a bike of your preference will be available.
Do I need to be a resident of the City of Markham to participate in a Markham Cycles event?
No, but you must be a resident of York Region.
What happens to the bikes not claimed?
Unclaimed bicycles will be collected by Markham Cycles to be repaired, refurbished and given away at their Recycle to Ride bike giveaway events. More information can be found at markhamcycles.ca
What condition should bikes be in for swapping?
Bicycles brought to swap must be in good working order, with functional brakes, steering and pedals. E-bikes are not accepted.
Who is Markham Cycles?
Markham Cycles is a community bicycle hub in the City of Markham that offers free bike repair support, educational workshops, community rides and cycling programs. Established in 2019, it works with community partners to remove barriers to cycling, promote safe riding and build a stronger cycling culture.

Recycle to Ride Bicycle Giveaways
Markham Cycles hosts a series of bicycle rescue clinics each year where volunteer fixers provide repairs. These bicycles are then given away to the community for free at several giveaway events each year.

Do I need to register to receive a free bicycle?

Do I need to be a resident of York Region to participate in the Cycle Swap and Share event?
Yes, this event is open to York Region residents only.
Can I volunteer to fix bicycles?
Yes. Volunteer bicycle mechanics are needed; experts and beginners alike are welcome. Please see Markham Cycles’ volunteer page for more information.
What condition must bicycles be in for donation?
Bicycles can be in any condition. Those that are not repairable or reusable will be used for parts to help fix other bicycles, then recycled as scrap metal.
If I live outside of York Region, can I still donate a bicycle?
Unfortunately, York Region waste depots are only open to York Region residents. However, search online for organizations that will accept used bicycles for donation. There are several available that will refurbish and give back to the community.
