Celebrating Welcoming Week

Welcoming Week is an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the people, places and values that help everyone feel welcome in York Region. This year’s celebration will take place from September 12 to 21, 2025.

In York Region, we recognize how important newcomers are as they represent the biggest driver of our population growth, strengthen the regional economy and enrich the social fabric of our local communities. Welcoming Week is an excellent opportunity to celebrate this.

York Region invites you to celebrate Welcoming Week by:

  • Attending an event near you (scroll down for a list of events)
  • Sharing how you are creating a welcoming place for newcomers by posting to social media using #YRWelcomingWeek2025  
  • Connecting directly with a newcomer in your community

Join the Welcoming Week GooseChase Fun!

Looking for an extra dose of excitement during Welcoming Week? Join our interactive, family-friendly virtual scavenger hunt on GooseChase for your chance to win awesome prizes! We have put together more than 55 challenges that you can complete by attending events hosted by libraries, municipalities, and community partners throughout Welcoming Week. Take pictures, solve clues and explore your community to earn points and a chance to win prizes. Prizes will be awarded based on highest total points earned at the end of the celebration. Some missions require attending events that have limited space and that require registration to participate, so be sure to sign up early! Submissions will be reviewed at the end of the Week.

September 15 – Who Ya Gonna Call? Town vs. Region Edition (1) – Aurora Public Library

Confused about who’s responsible for fixing roads, collecting waste, or running transit? Join us for a fun and informative session where we break down which services are handled by the Town and which fall under the Region — so you’ll always know who to call! September 17 - A Journey to Better Nutrition (Ages 55+) – Aurora Public Library 

Good nutrition is essential at every age, playing a vital role in maintaining energy, health, and overall well-being. This program is designed to help participants understand the importance of balanced eating and how it impacts daily life. Topics will include healthy weight gain and weight loss, managing appetite, simple strategies for getting the right nutrients, and practical tips for eating well on a budget. In partnership with Community and Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS).

September 21 – Doors Open Aurora – Town of Aurora 

Doors Open Ontario is a provincewide heritage tourism program that gives the public free access to explore fascinating heritage properties all across Ontario. It showcases the buildings, natural spaces, infrastructure and cultural landscapes that shape and define our communities.  Come and explore Aurora's unique built heritage and cultural treasures during Doors Open 2025. Confirmed sites include Aurora Town Square, the Aurora War Memorial, Hillary House National Historic Site and Dave's Vinyl Party Headquarters.

September 20 – Culture Days: Global Grooves and Family Fun – Town of Whitchurch- Stouffville

Join 19 on the Park Theatre at the Stouffville Market for a vibrant day of music, culture, and family-friendly fun! From 11 AM - 12PM, enjoy the electrifying sounds of KUNE – Canada’s Global Orchestra. Experience a vibrant fusion of global sounds as this dynamic ensemble of international musicians brings unity to life through rhythm and melody. Featuring instruments like the oud, cajon, and tar, their performance promises an unforgettable musical journey. The free fun continues offstage with face painting from 9–11 AM, the beautiful art of henna from 12–2 PM, and prizes throughout the day.

You will also receive a guide to various York region trails available and explore community garden opportunities. Please dress for the weather. This is a great way to connect with other families and educators and develop a deeper understanding of the natural environment as newcomers settle into their new communities.

Just bring your ID and proof of address. This tour is open to everyone, but it's especially beneficial for newcomers to Markham or Canada. We'll focus on resources that can assist newcomers, refugees and those supporting them.

September 18 – Permanent Resident to Canadian Citizen: What You Need to Know About Family, Status, & Sponsorship – Markham Public Library 

In this program, our speaker, an Immigration Consultant, will share her professional insights with examples from real case experiences. Participants will learn about how to calculate residency obligations for PR renewal vs. citizenship applications; exceptions to the residency requirements; whether a PR or citizen can lose their status; who can pass on citizenship; and how family sponsorship works under Canadian immigration law. Celebrate Welcoming Week with the Vaughan Welcome Centre from September 15th- 17th by joining us for First Responders Week, a special 3-day event for the community! Each day, the featured service will provide learning opportunities and park their vehicles outside the Centre for the community to explore. Last year, the vehicles included police cruisers, marine unit boats, ATVs, motorcycles, fire trucks and ambulances. Join 19 on the Park Theatre at the Stouffville Market for a vibrant day of music, culture, and family-friendly fun! From 11 AM - 12PM, enjoy the electrifying sounds of KUNE – Canada’s Global Orchestra. Experience a vibrant fusion of global sounds as this dynamic ensemble of international musicians brings unity to life through rhythm and melody. Featuring instruments like the oud, cajon, and tar, their performance promises an unforgettable musical journey. The free fun continues offstage with face painting from 9–11 AM, the beautiful art of henna from 12–2 PM, and prizes throughout the day.
